The Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) degree is offered as a one-year postgraduate degree to students who have graduated from an engineering school in India that is accredited by the AICTE. On completion of the engine cadet program, an engine cadet would qualify for 6 months of onboard training as a Junior Engineer onboard a seagoing vessel, receiving free boarding & lodging in addition to a monthly stipend. His next step is to take the Certificate of Competency (COC) Examination (Class IV) administered by the Directorate General of Shipping. Once he receives the COC, he will be permitted to serve onboard as a Fourth Engineering Officer.
