400 seats to be added in Tamil Nadu Medical Colleges from Academic Session 2020


From 2020, Tamil Nadu will increase 400 seats for the MBBS program in the current seats count during its admission process. 

The Medical Council of India has announced 250 seats in every existing medical college under its affiliation, for both Government and Private. It has also been permitted to start a UG medical program from 2021 through colleges under the self-financing scheme.

MBBS seats in Government Kanyakumari Medical College and Hospital have also increased by 50, taking the total to 150 as said by the director of medical education. Dr. R Narayanababu said. During its initial phase, it started with 100 seats in 2004 and went on to add postgraduate medical programs in the year 2016. 

"The policy of the state is to start new medical in every district and increase seats in all existing medical colleges to 250. Besides training doctors, these colleges will function as tertiary health care facilities," he said.

Another Medical College affiliated to Dr. MGR Medical University, the Panimalar Medical College Hospital and Research Institute has also been permitted to start with 150 seats for MBBS. It has been working on the self-financing scheme. MCI has also approved 100 additional seats in each of the following deemed universities:

Reports suggest that three more medical colleges have applied to MCI to get the affiliation in order to begin the medical program. These colleges shall run on private, self-financed mode with no support from the government. 

Already, it has been reported that 7.5 Percent Seats have been Reserved for Government School Students in Tamil Nadu for UG Medical Courses

"If they get permission they will add another 450 seats. As of now, these colleges have been asked to make a few rectifications and reapply." a senior official said.

But the medical colleges need to make sure that they fulfil certain criteria to Encourage the Infrastructure with Minimum 2 BSL Labs. 

Last week, health minister C Vijayabaskar stated that they are waiting for MCI officials to check the eligibility of the 11 new medical colleges’ campuses and grant the permit to start. 

Already, the cabinet committee on economic affairs had approved the setting up of 75 government medical colleges in the next session, across the country. As proposed, Centre shall partially fund the project with the goal of increasing the number of medical colleges. With the increase of medical colleges, we can see the increase of the medical seats by 1650, next year.
