Last year, AICTE made Maths and Physics optional for all the engineering courses which faced immense criticism and hence they rectified the rule to some extent.

As per the National Education Policy 2020, the school education system is divided into 5+3+3+4 patterns. The last four years…they will be studying a liberal arts type stream where they can take maths, physics, psychology or chemistry and computer science. It will help students join any other new program when they complete class 12…”, as stated by Anil D Sahashrabudhe, AICTE Chairman.

There are conflicts among the stakeholders regarding this decision. As per them, any engineering course requires minimal knowledge of Maths and Physics and making those optional might be a hindrance.

On the other hand, there are many educationists who have welcomed this decision.

It provides students, who have chosen different subjects in higher secondary, an opportunity to pursue professional degree programmes”, as stated by S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, the Vice-Chancellor of Sastra.

AICTE has made it clear that Maths, Physics, Chemistry in Class 12 will remain mandatory for students desiring to pursue courses such as Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Dairy, Energy, Fire and Safety, Marine and Metallurgy, Mining and Nano Technology and Nuclear Science Technology.
