All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar has received funds from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to set up a Satellite Brain Bank, a first-of-its-kind in the eastern region.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar received a total amount of INR 47 lakh from ICMR to establish Satellite Brain Biobank in its department of pathology and lab machine which will boost research in Neurosciences.
According to the sources, ICMR has sanctioned a sum of INR 47 lakh to develop a satellite brain biobank in the eastern region.
The institute will collaborate with NIMHANS, Bengaluru, to boost research in the neuroscience field in Eastern India.
A satellite brain bank is a repository of brain samples of deceased persons that will be useful in research work.
According to reports from AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the scheme has been approved by ICMR for the duration of three years, and once the review of the work is completed, the annual extensions will be granted.
The coordinator of this project will be Dr Suvendu Purkrait, Assistant Professor in the department of pathology. Meanwhile, the budget for the project has been allotted as a part of the National Task Force project, titled "Brain Bank Network India Initiative: Establishments of Satellite Brain Bank in India for NeuroScience Research".
The main aim of the project is to boost neuroscience research and its development in the country.
