Allahabad University Central Library to be Revived With RFID Technology; Full Report Here

Prayagraj: Allahabad University has started the process of equipping its central library with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification System) Technology on November 12, 2020.

Allahabad University (AU) has an expansive central library in Prayagraj with around 7.5 lakhs books. With the help of newly equipped RFID technology, readers will be able to search and locate any book they want with a single mouse click.

Initiating the process, university authority sent a proposal worth ₹1.10 crore to the Ministry of Education. After receiving approval from the ministry, the RFID setup process will begin.

According to the official source, the RFID technology uses a set of stripes, which self dissolves once placed inside any book. Users can trace the book by entering a set of stripes on the machine, and locate the location with ease.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification System) Technology is an automated material handling system. The system will help management to accelerate the process of returning books to the library easier and faster.

However, many library science experts have some concerns about the use of this technology.

A senior faculty member of Allahabad University said, “it is debatable if the AU central library is ready for RFID technology or not because the technology would need every student to pass through a gate”

He further added, “It would be a long and hard task to maintain and this is the reason why universities like Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, and Delhi University have not adopted this technology yet”.

Earlier in 2008, the central government announced sanctioning of ₹10 crores for the up-gradation of the library but only half the money was furnished to AU and the RFID concept was never initiated.
