Anna University Likely to Hold Final-Year Exams from Third Week of September

On 2 September, Anna University asked around 500 engineering colleges to start preparing for offline examinations. The university is planning to hold examinations in the third week of September. Students in Tamil Nadu may take the examinations near their homes.

Anna University was preparing for an online examination; however, after the lockdown was relaxed in the state, the higher education department said exams will be held offline.

In a circular, the controller of examinations said, “As per the directions of the government, we are preparing for the conduct of end semester examinations for final year students during the third week of September so that the exams can be completed before this month.”

The circular also asked regional officers about the maximum number of students that can be accommodated in each zone, except colleges currently functioning as COVID care centres. To maintain social distancing, it also insisted on the reduction of the number of students in halls from 25 to 12.

The examination centres will be arranged in engineering colleges near the students’ homes.

On 3 September, the higher education department held a meeting of vice-chancellors to discuss the offline examinations. It was decided that the final semester examination will have a duration of three hours; students from outside Tamil Nadu and India will probably be allowed to take the examinations online.

A vice-chancellor who participated in the meeting said, “Students must come to the college daily for the exams. If they live far away, arrangements will be made for writing exams in a nearby centre.”

The state is expected to issue guidelines and the examination timetable in two days’ time.

Some professors insisted that students be allowed to take the examinations either online or offline. They argued that many parents may be unwilling to send their children outside to take the examinations.
