How do you plan activities and programs to enhance the skills of the students?

“Having a set of predefined goals and objectives to be achieved”

All academic and non-academic activities in a unit are used to teach the students the things that we want them to know and understand. Always keep in mind that if we want our students to be able to do something, we must make sure that we teach them how. For example, if we have an assessment task that requires students to write a case study of a patient, then it will be important for the learning activities in our unit to include elements and aspects of case study skills, assessment, history taking, and communication skills with the patient. The process also includes critical analysis, presenting arguments, supporting ideas with evidence, etc. A set of common features which are part of planning activities and programs are: -

  • Including lesson plans, lectures, class schedule, activities, experimental studies, lab practices
  • Clearly defined session/module outcomes
  • Students receiving feedback on their learning as a part of the experience along with their regular monitoring of all over personality development

What are the unique features of the physiotherapy department of SGVU?

“Staying connected to the patients and being a part of their journey to a better health”

The unique features of the physiotherapy department include liveliness. All students and faculties interact in a professional manner with a homely sense of care which makes the students feel at home. Patients coming up for consultation and treatment, which is available at a very minimal fee, feel free to discuss all their problems related to the disorder without any hesitation. They receive proper counseling here. Students are being taught all techniques and are introduced to practical sessions where they get hands-on experience.

What is your strategy to make this course different from the other institutions?

“Letting the students explore the particular domain in which they are enrolled”

The strategies are inbuilt in the university that will set us apart as an institution. In SVGU, the physiotherapy course has been segregated as 4 years 6 months in 8 semesters, and a 6-month internship with a variety of subjects. Semester courses and subjects have been designed in such a manner that the subject becomes easier for a student to understand and memorize for a longer duration of time. Also, the soft skill training sessions given to the students make them a complete professional who has a sense of confidence, communication skills, personality development, and the finest knowledge of the subject.

What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?

“Initiatives that let the students contribute to the making of a healthy society”

Physiotherapy is a medical course so our project areas are directed towards humans. Students work on the project related to sports person activities performances, neurological patients with disabilities of different disorders like stroke, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, Poliomyelitis, head injuries, etc. Recently the students have also been working on the project of mass awareness for the proper use of masks while exercising which will keep them healthy amidst the changing scenario due to the Covid19 pandemic.

How does the curriculum of Physiotherapy at SGVU ensure the best practice of the industry?

“Giving the students a platform to apply their knowledge for a better understanding”

The curriculum of physiotherapy at SGVU trains students to have practical exposure from the first year onwards on the campus. It lets them have a better grip on the subjects that they are studying with their clinical relevance. This makes us different from others. By this practice, students get the benefit of learning by observing, clinical handling, practice, and experience in-depth acquisition of knowledge.

Please share the importance of physiotherapy in today’s world?

“Not only heals but also prevents prevailing conditions from worsening”

Physiotherapy is the most commonly prescribed treatment to assist in the recovery of many injuries and conditions. Chronic pain, sports injuries, neurological disorders, orthopedic conditions like post-fracture or post knee or hip replacement rehabilitation, and challenges with mobility can all be greatly improved with the use of physiotherapy. Physiotherapy not only heals and treats people but also creates awareness among people about good health.

What goals do you have for your department for the next 5 years?

“To bring the best opportunities to our students”

For the next five years, we have planned to start up new short term courses for various techniques and maneuvers, collaboration with hospitals, NGOs, and sports teams and coaches for different additional skills in the curriculum. Once achieved, it will widen the scope of physiotherapy for our students and they will have more liberty to choose the field they want to work in.

What suggestions would you like to give to the current physiotherapy students?

“Carry the passion to heal the ones in need”

Students in Physiotherapy must have the heart of a humanist, brain like a scientist, and hands of an artist. A physiotherapist gives life to years not years to life. So, be a proud physiotherapist who is a provider of love, care, affection for the patients, and lastly, carries the finest knowledge.
