Dr. Vitsou Yano is the Principal of Modern College Kohima. She joined this college in August 2017. With a Ph.D. in Women’s studies and an M.Phil in History, she evidently has a passion for academics. She has organized international and national seminars, workshops, webinars, etc. & also has attended and presented research articles in both International and National Seminars. She has published papers in various journals and books. Some of her research interest includes women’s history, Food studies, Cultural studies, identities, etc.

As a Principal, What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Working & collaborating with young talented minds of the students”

The everyday learning community of the teachers and the students has been a strong point where innovative ideas and new things happen in the education sector. The energetic vibes and the positivity of the students always push a teacher to higher ground and to look beyond our classroom’s learning. The talents of students also have encouraged me to get more attached to work with young people and learn more.

What is your philosophy of leadership?

“I want to influence, motivate, and intellectually inspire young minds”

My philosophy of leadership is more of a transformational style. Identifying the specific factors/achievements is necessary for the students and the teachers. Being a good listener and having proper communication with students and teachers is very important for me as a principal, whereby, it can make an impact on the college which ultimately brings in teachers satisfaction and the achievements of the students.

In your experience, what can an inbound student gain from studying here in your institute?

“Quality and skilled education through digital classes”

Online classes have now a new face of students, from all over the world which includes my college. Though there are huge gaps and differences, the digital classes can easily link up the style, innovations, and ideas of every student today where they can be confident to face the foreign countries’ educational structure.

How does the curriculum of Modern College ensure the best practice of industry?

“A 360-degree development of the students along with academic excellence”

One of the best practices of our College is Students Extracurricular activities, apart from the academic activities. Almost every month there are students’ activities where they can exhibit their talents through different ways and means. Students oriented programs are organized so that they realize their talents and follow their dreams and passion.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the University and the students are?

“To assist and resolve all the grievances of student & faculty members in a disciplined manner”

I believe my role as a Principal is to develop, coordinate, and work for an effective administration of the college starting from professional development, staff (both teaching and non-teaching staff), students, etc.

What has been your vision for the university & how has it evolved?

“To grow the institute in the area of research-based knowledge”

Our vision has improved and changed in many ways. We aim to impart education via more Seminars/ workshops for both students and teachers. Publications and research need to improve amongst the teachers. Both teachers and students are working really hard to achieve and maintain academic quality. In the coming years, I hope the college will grow more in quality and research.

What would you like people to know about your university they may not know?

“Short term UGC recognized skill courses also offered apart from conventional ones”

The modern college has two campuses, one in Kohima and the other in Piphema (New Campus). The college not only offers the regular courses and programs but also short term skilled courses which are recognized by UGC. Modern college is the only college that offers B. Voc in Nagaland. Modern College under the motto “True education” not only teaches the Academic text for grades but also teaches and offers skilled education for a better future.
