Calcutta University: Colleges to Conduct Another Round of Admissions as Seats Open Up

Calcutta Colleges affiliated to Calcutta University are waiting for a nod from the university and state government to conduct another round of admission for First Semester intake.

The colleges have concluded one round of admissions. But a lot of seats have opened up after students cancelled their admission to the courses applied for.

The principal of Surendranath College, Indranil Kar has suggested that one of the reasons behind such cancellation of admission is the ongoing global pandemic.

“We received several candidates from districts but some of them decided to pull out. Maybe, they are unsure of studying in Kolkata amid a pandemic and uncertainty. These students may have preferred a college close to their homes.” Kar said.

Surendranath College has an intake capacity of 2500 seats. Out of which around 900 seats from various honours and general courses have been left vacant. Around 200 students are reported to have applied for a cancellation of their admission to the first semester of various course.

The scenario is similar to Maulana Azad College, where almost 100 students have revoked their admission.

For Lady Brabourne College, there are almost 107 seats available from a total of 619 seats.

“CU asked for a report at the earliest,” said principal Siuli Sarkar.

The principals of various colleges are hoping that Calcutta University will allow conducting admission for these vacant seats so that interested students who could not get chance previously might give it another try.
