New Delhi: Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik launched the "Olympic Values Education" Programme (OVEP) virtually into the curriculum of 90 schools of Odisha, in association with the IOC and the Abhinav Bindra Foundation Trust.
The OVEP has been started as a pilot project in schools situated across Rourkela and Bhubaneswar, which will likely be expanded to other schools in the near future.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has set up the first Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) in the country. OVEP's launch was followed by the Olympism-themed curriculum that has been integrated into school education in the state.
In order to introduce and make the youth familiar with the Olympic values of excellence, respect and friendship, the IOC has introduced OVEP as a practical set of resources.
According to the reports, the primary objective of the programme is to disseminate this values-based curriculum to guide children in becoming active, healthy and responsible citizens.
In the first year, the programme aims to impact over 32,000 children enrolled in nearly 90 schools in the cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, after which it is expected to reach around 7 million children.
The virtual event was attended by the IOA president Narinder Batra, IOC member Nita Ambani, Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra, ministers and officials of Odisha, apart from officials of IOC.
Speaking during the launch of OVEP, the Odisha CM said that sports are an integral and important part of the vision for education and personality development.
Expressing his delight in integrating both into the curriculum, he said that the state government has always strived to achieve excellence in education as well as sports.
He also acknowledged the contributions of state's close partners in sports - Indian Olympic Association chairperson Narendra Batra, Nita Ambani and Abhinav Bindra towards the development of sports in Odisha.
Patnaik expressed confidence that these partnerships will make a significant contribution towards impactful holistic development of Odisha young school children.
Abhinav Bindra, who was also present, said that the practical implementation of Olympic values is the way forward. As there'll be better citizens in the future.
IOC Member Neeta Ambani said that though every child cannot be an Olympian, but all can learn, powered by the Olympism movement, which is the mission of OVEP, making it a huge opportunity for India.
