New Delhi: Delhi University has announced to discontinue M.Phil programmes from the academic session 2022-23. The university released the notification on Friday in accordance with the NEP 2020.

As per the notification issued by DUthe existing M.Phil programme is to be discontinued from the academic year of 2022-23. The discontinuation of M.Phil programmes is one of the major recommendations of the NEP. Contrarily, the policy focuses on the 4 year Bachelor degree programmes in the UG and PG levels.

There may be an integrated five-year Bachelor’s/Master’s programme. Undertaking a PhD shall require either a degree or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree with Research. The MPhil programme will be discontinued”, as stated in the NEP policy.

On January 21, the University released a draft regarding the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022 (UGCF 2022) to invite suggestions and feedback from the stakeholders including students, parents and academicians.

Similar to DU, last year the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) also made an announcement regarding the discontinuation of M.Phil course.

As per the notification by DU, the students will be allowed direct admission to PhD after the PG courses without the M.Phil.

This decision by DU, however, has met with a considerable amount of resistance from a section of the active academicians. Abha Dev, Secretary, Democratic Teachers’ Front and former member, Executive Council, DU, commented that with this policy, NEP 2020 seems to be taking away the choice of the students. As per this policy, they either have to opt for PhD or nothing after their graduation.

Students with disadvantageous backgrounds, especially women, looked upto MPhil as a research degree they could afford before going towards teaching jobs”, she further added.

Mithuraaj Dhusiya, member of Academic Council, DU, explained how throughout the time, M.Phil course had played a significant role in DU as well as other Indian universities in developing research aptitude through rigorous coursework that prepared the students for their PhD.

MPhil research degree has been a degree by itself separate from and at the same time above Master’s degree. It is extremely unfortunate that the NEP 2020 discontinues MPhil”, he further added to his statement.
