DET Success Stories

Here are 5 students from different parts of the world sharing their DET experiences. This can help and motivate other students to take the exam.

Student 1: Georges Macheta, Damascus, Syria; University of St. Thomas

Georges is a Schulze Innovation Scholar at the University of St. Thomas. When he thought about studying abroad after he got into high school which was the National Center for the Distinguished. He saw a couple of people applying abroad and chose to come to the US. The University of St. Thomas is flexible about choosing multiple majors, changing majors or minors, and the liberal arts curriculum. He wanted to have the college life experience which he wouldn't get in Syria.

He found out about the DET while applying to a university using TOEFL paper-based test scores. But the university did not accept TOEFL scores. So he took the DET, which was more convenient. He had a nice experience considering the circumstances in which he was living in Syria. It had a lack of electricity and an unstable internet connection. So, having an online test that is very short in time is really convenient. And having the ability to take it multiple times without worrying about waiting for results for a very long time or it is very costly.

So, being an international student is a different experience than being a domestic student in your own country. He really had different experiences and gained a lot of new connections and new cultural experiences that are really mind-opening.

Student 2: Gabriella Sally, Jakarta Indonesia; Babson College in Massachusetts

She is currently studying entrepreneurship at Babson College in Massachusetts. Initially, she was not sure about going to college. But she was sure that she wanted to go somewhere that would give her a lot of flexibility and more knowledge than in Indonesia. She wanted to go to college in the United States as the program, professors, and connections that you make would build her network. So, while applying for colleges, their requirements come to the English proficiency testing page. There she saw one University that had a Duolingo English test in it and she was confused as she considered Duolingo to be a language learning app. She used it once when she was in 7th grade to learn German. The Duolingo English proficiency test was really affordable, and accessible. It just required a laptop, a quiet room, and an internet connection, and one is all set for the test. The Duolingo results took around 24 to 48 hours.

So, DET compared to other tests was easier for her. DET tests their English proficiency skills so she feels like it provides a more accurate representation of her skills. So, attending a really good school for entrepreneurship in the United States, to do my research was her dream.

Student 3: Harsh Vardhan, India(Andra Pradesh);  National College of Ireland (NCI)
Harsh is a resident of Andhra Pradesh, India. He pursued his bachelor's degree in EC from Satyabhama university in Chennai. He is going to do a machine cyber security course in Ireland in September end. He took DET for his language proficiency test. He has filled out his study visa. He has also received a scholarship of around 4000 euros is around 3.5 lakh in INR.

Student 4: Chisom, Nigeria; University of Nigeria

Chisom is an undergraduate student of chemistry at the University of Nigeria. And his undergraduate degree, he wanted to further his education. It is very competitive to get a spot to do a Ph.D. in the US with just a Bachelor's Degree. So he decided to go to Europe to do Masters. He started his journey in France and then he did a semester in Poland and also in Italy. It was a very rewarding experience. He got to experience European cultures, food, and a lot of awesome things.

It helped him because having an international degree, apart from what he had in his country, kind of made him stand out during his application. So while he was still doing his Master's he checked out a couple of schools in the US. Later, he applied for a Ph.D. and he got into the University of California in Davis. He also heard about the Duolingo English Test while applying for Ph.D.

So, he decided to check it out. DET cost about $49 and it only took about 45 minutes to complete. He felt that it was awesome compared to the grueling, gruesome 4 hours he had to face while writing TOEFL or IELTS. Then he applied for the DET, wrote it, got a great score on the first try, and then submitted his applications. At first, he thought it was going to be easy but when he took the actual test, he found that the more easily he answered the questions, the harder it got. So if anyone is able to get a good grade on the Duolingo English Test, he or she be able to

stay in the classroom and understand a lecture. Being able to understand and communicate in basic English it's one of the things anyone needs to know. So, to be in a classroom and he thought the test actually does a great job at testing that.

Student 5: Serena, Chile; Barnard College

Serena wanted to come to the States, for the possibility of liberal arts education. In Chile, once anyone leaves high school, they decide on a career path immediately. Having the possibility of studying several things at the same time, she knew that she had to take an English test. She initially thought of taking the TOEFL or the IELTS. But when she learned about the Duolingo English Test, she was really happy because she would be able to fit it into her schedule the way she wanted.

She was able to do it from her own house. She was very determined to do this, to come here, and her parents were really scared but didn't want to hold her back. She is really happy to have found a place where all these things come together, like liberal arts, a small place, where she can study everything she is interested in. But also has the resources of Columbia University, and in New York City which is like, the best school anyone can have.

Student 6: Yein, Korea; University of Pennsylvania

Yein got interested in geo-engineering while she was doing research at her high school. Geo-engineering and climate engineering are basically using engineering technologies to mitigate climate change. So, it does so either by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or reflecting sunlight back into the universe. Those kinds of technologies can actually mitigate and reverse climate change. So, she thought about going to college. So, she took the TOEFL. It was kind of intimidating, and there were so many students in one room. While she was listening, someone was speaking right next to her. While she was writing something, someone was saying something. That was kind of distracting. And when she was in senior year, her high school counselor recommended taking this Duolingo English Test. And it was way less stressful because she could take an exam in her room where she was really comfortable, and nobody was around her. She was using her own laptop, like usual. DET was cheaper than TOEFL and did not need to pay for sending scores to multiple schools. All the students driving and using transportation to test centers, add up. That's gonna be a lot of carbon emissions, only to take an exam. Taking an exam in one’s own home, that's gonna reduce a lot of carbon emissions. She wanted to go to graduate school to learn more about engineering technologies. The study can contribute to solving and mitigating climate change and that can be implemented and make a significant change.
