Universities in Pune have told the foreign students studying with them to stay at their home as they are preparing a framework to start out the semester online and possibly the entire year.
The universities however need to finalize the mode of assessment and obtain approval from the regulatory body.
Kirti Mahajan, Director, International Students’ Cell Bharati Vidyapeeth (deemed-to-be-university) said that “For International students, the university is getting to hold the whole semester online. All rules and regulations need to be framed and approved by the govt bodies within the university just like the Board of studies. If the coronavirus situation remains grim, the university may extend the web classes to a different semester as heath of the scholars is that the first priority.”
As per the record, the number of foreign students comping to Pune has declined from 1,804 in 2016 to 1,449 in 2018-19. With the coronavirus outbreak, it's expected that it'll affect the number. An official from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) said that this year the university is expecting a 20 percent drop in admissions of international students due to the pandemic.
Bharati Vidyapeeth University had 581 students in 2016-17 but in 2019-20 the footfall declined to 453. From 859 students in 2016-17, the number decreased to 610 in SPPU in 2019-20.
While commenting on the admissions this year, Vidya Yeravedkar, Principal Director, Symbiosis Society, said that the coronavirus situation is predicted to affect the admission of international students within the universities. The university is getting to convert the primary semester into a web semester in order that international students can come to college in Pune within the second semester.
