GATE 2022 Might be Postponed Amid COVID-19 Crisis, Hints IIT Kharagpur; Read Details Here


New Delhi: IIT Kharagpur has recently issued an official notice, that hints at postponing GATE 2022 in view of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. The notice has been issued on the official website, iitkgp.ac.in.

As per GATE 2022 exam dates, the examination will be held on February 5, 6, 12 and 13 across the country. The exam conducting authority, IIT Kharagpur has already released the GATE 2022 Admit Card at gate.iitkgp.ac.in on January 15, 2022. 

Keeping in mind the ongoing pandemic situation and concerns of students, IIT Kharagpur has released an important announcement on the official website, which states that due to the surge of Covid-19 cases, the GATE 2022 may get postponed. 

"The health and safety of our examination participants are of utmost priority. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, all dates mentioned on this website may change. In rare cases, the GATE 2022 examination may be postponed or cancelled due to situations beyond control".

In the official announcement released, IIT Kharagpur has further directed all candidates to get vaccinated for Covid-19. The notification brought relief to students who are unable to appear for the upcoming examination due to unfavorable covid-19 conditions. 

GATE 2022: Over 23K Registered Candidates Demand Postponement of Exam

Earlier, in view of increasing cases of the Covid-19 pandemic, over 23,000 candidates who have registered to appear for the GATE 2022 exam have signed a petition demanding the cancellation of the examination. 

"With the current third wave, COVID-19 due to its new variant Omicron has spread severely in several states, cities. Several studies including one done by IIT Kanpur predict that the peak of the 3rd wave is expected in early February and the wave will end by April. Therefore, the peak is most likely to coincide with the usual exam dates of GATE," the petition read.

The petition further requested the authorities not to call for exams when the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic is rising in the country. If the exam dates are not postponed, the risk of getting infected with Covid-19 is more likely.

"If exam authority won’t take any action against the exam commencement, the candidates appearing for GATE 2022 run an imminent risk of getting infected and spreading it thereby getting threat to their life as well as their family member's lives," it added.

Students stressed the fact that while many colleges and institutes in the country have already postponed their examination and started online classes, GATE is still going ahead with the examination. 

Many concerned students took their appeal on Twitter, requesting the authorities to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of students. They argued that the government is risking the lives of thousands of students if it goes with exam commencement. 

Earlier, IIT Kharagpur has released the official GATE 2022 Exam Day Guidelines for students. However, there is still no news of exam cancellation or postponement. Students can still expect changes in exam schedules if the pandemic situation remains the same.
