What is UPSC?
Union Public Service Commission is India’s central agency, which conducts various exams such as, Civil Services Exam, IFS, NDA, CDS, SCRA, etc. Civil services examination is popularly known as the IAS exam and includes almost 24 services like IFS, IPS, IRS, IRPS, and so on. The civil service exam is one the most reputed and tough to crack exams in India. Also simply referred to as the UPSC examination, it is conducted in three phases - a preliminary examination consisting of two objective-type papers (General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper-II also popularly known as Civil Service Aptitude Test or CSAT), and a main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional (essay) type, in which two papers are qualifying and only marks of seven are counted followed by a personality test (interview)

Educational Qualification
The various academic requirements as per the IAS Eligibility Criteria are given below:
- Minimum qualification for UPSC exam: The candidate must hold a degree from Government recognized Universities or possess an equivalent qualification.
- In their final year or awaiting results, candidates are also eligible to appear for UPSC preliminary Examination. All such candidates who are likely to appear for IAS exams must produce proof of having passed the said examination along with the application for the main IAS examination.
- Candidates having professional and technical qualifications recognized by the Government as equivalent to professional and technical degrees.
UPSC Eligibility- Nationality
Candidate must be either:-
- A citizen of India, or
- A subject of Nepal, or
- A subject of Bhutan, or
- A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 intending to settle in India permanently, or
- A person of Indian origin (PIO) who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zaire, and Vietnam intending to settle in India permanently.
Category wise UPSC age limit, relaxation, and maximum attempts-
- General Category & EWS: 32 years; 6 attempts.
- OBC (with certificate): 32 years + 3 years; 9 attempts.
- SC/ST: 32 years + 5 years; unlimited attempts.
- Physically Disabled: 32 years + 10 years; Gen/OBC/Person with Benchmark Disability(EWS category)- 9 attempts & SC/ST unlimited attempts.
- Jammu & Kashmir Domicile: 32 years + 5 years + (3 years, if OBC OR 5 Years, if SC/ST); Number of attempts depends on the reserved category.
- Disabled and discharged Defence service personnel: 32 years + 3 years + (3 years, if Gen/OBC OR 5 years, if SC/ST)
- Ex-Servicemen Commission Officer: 32 years + 5 years + (3 years, if OBC OR 5 Years, if SC/ST)
Vacancies
The Union Public Service Commission has announced a total of 712 vacancies which are to be filled through the Civil Services Examination 2021
22 vacancies are for the Persons with Benchmark Disability Category:
- 5 vacancies for candidates of blindness and low vision
- 6 Vacancies for deaf and hard of hearing
- 6 Vacancies for locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy, and
- 5 Vacancies for multiple disabilities from amongst persons under clauses (a) to (c) including deaf-blindness.
What is the EXAM PATTERN for UPSC IAS Prelims & Mains 2021 exams?
Answer: The exam pattern is different for UPSC IAS Prelims and IAS Mains Exam. The UPSC IAS Prelims is an objective multiple-choice questions (MCQ) format exam and the IAS Mains is a descriptive format exam. ANS. If a candidate actually appears in any one paper in the Preliminary Examination, he/she shall be deemed to have made an attempt at the Examination. Notwithstanding the disqualification/ cancellation of candidature, the fact of appearance of the candidate at the examination will count as an attempt.
