New Delhi: The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will soon introduce online courses and a specifically dedicated portal, possibly on April 2, 2022. On Monday, February 21, 2022, ICCR President Vinay Sahasrabuddhe announced the launching of this course on Indian Knowledge System and its art and architecture for the sake of preservation of these timeless gems.

While addressing a press conference at Azad Bhawan where the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was planning to hold celebrations for ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the ICCR President also discussed the 3 day crafts fair ‘Coalescence’. The fair is to be hosted from February, 23, 2022 till 25th February. 11 states will participate in the fair.

During the ongoing celebration marking 75 years of India’s Independence Day, Sahasrabuddhe further added to his statement.

We are also going to start Universalisation of Traditional Indian Knowledge System or UTIKS, as part of which people living in foreign countries will be able to learn about traditional knowledge of our country through online courses, and appreciate our art, culture and epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana,” as stated by him.

He compared the online courses with Coursera courses.

There will be short-term and long-term online courses, ranging from four hours to 40 hours, on everything under the sun about Indian culture. From a recipe for rosogullah to fundamentals of Warli paintings, Madhubani art, appreciating the art of Ajanta and Ellora caves, understanding the basics of Vedas, introduction to Ramayana and Mahabharata, the life of Babasaheb Ambedkar, among other subjects,” he also stated.

ICCR has partnered up with Savitribai Phule University for these online courses. Later, many other institutions may join but initially, Savitribhai Phule is the main partner.

There is no age restriction for the candidates interested in this course and the fees will be very nominal.

As per the ICCR President, a portal for the UTIKS is ready already and is most likely to be launched during April. The Foreign Minister will most probably inaugurate this. Once the portal is launched, candidates can register by themselves and enrol by themselves.

During the celebrations at the Crafts Fair, ICCR will also most probably offer an ‘Indian-alumni-i-card’ to the foreign students who have learned the Indian music from their ‘gurus’ and completed the process. This is to further highlight how art and craft play a significant role in attracting the audience.

Meenakshi Lekhi from the Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, is likely to inaugurate the ceremony at the Bikaner House. Many diplomats have been invited to attend too. 11 states with their traditional art forms such as bamboo art, Textiles, traditional and folk art, recycled products, will be ready to show their skills. Along with displaying their art, each artisan will get 45-60 minutes to talk about their skill and art.
