IIM Sambalpur and SIDBI to boost entrepreneurship amongst local weavers and craftsmen


New Delhi: The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and IIM Sambalpur have signed a MOU for the development of weavers' and artisans' entrepreneurial skills in Orissa.

Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director of IIM Sambalpur, and Dr. Subhransu Acharya, CGM SIDBI, both signed the contract on October 19,2022.

A MoU was also signed by the prestigious institute and e-commerce behemoth Flipkart as part of the latter's recently introduced On-board procedure for Master weavers and Artisans in Digital Marketing platform.

28 Master weavers and artisans from the Bargarh and Sambalpur districts, as well as members of the media and the local community, attended the programme.

Aim of the MOU

Jaiswal discussed the emphasis IIM Sambalpur places on encouraging the development of the nation's entrepreneurial capacity and its ability to enter the global market,

“There will be three stages-1st stage ;,,aims at digital logistics and access to the market. The second stage aims at building competitive capacity and bringing the handloom of different states, :analysing and expanding the project nationwide followed by the third stage aims at tying up with the global market and ;commercialise the handloom worldwide,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Akash Mishra, Director, Government Affairs, East ;;;;Region Flipkart Group said, “This MoU will help artisans and weavers to onboard their products in the online market and congratulated all the artisans and weavers for their onboarding in the online market.”

The event concluded by reflecting on many objectives, including strengthening the small business/micro-enterprise ecosystem of various craft clusters across the state and country in general, and the Bargarh/Sambalpur/Sonepur districts handloom cluster in particular, across medium to long-term strategic initiatives.

Several strategic interventions will be implemented as part of the partnership, with the goal of strengthening supply chains, assisting clusters in becoming self-sufficient, and developing an entrepreneurial culture.
