IIM Visakhapatnam, HPCL Ink MoU for Joint Research and Academic Programs; Details Here

Indian Institute of Management-Visakhapatnam has commenced a five-month-long Professional Program in Human Resource Management (PPHRM) for the officers of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). The group has participants from Mumbai and Visakhapatnam.

The collaboration between HPCL and IIM Visakhapatnam comes as a part of the MoU that they signed recently to improve the academic-industry engagement and collaboration between the two major public sector organizations.

The Executive Director-Employee Relations of HPCL, Suresh Shetty, said: “It is important for an HR professional to inculcate the three basic components such as empathy, ethical governance, and analytical skills to develop the right HR attitude."

IIM-Visakhapatnam Director Prof M Chandrasekhar spoke about the importance of empowering employees and the role of HR in an organisation. "Creativity and innovation come from empowering employees. Progressive organisations such as HPCL sustain their high performance because employees are productive and satisfied. This is an important factor that is to be constantly nurtured and maintained by the HR, especially when the workforce comprises a mix of millennials and experienced professionals,” added Prof Chandrasekhar.

As per the MoU, IIM Visakhapatnam will provide HPCL officials with short-term and long-term programs to assist them to improve their management and leadership abilities. IIM-V will perform surveys and research to meet the demands of HPCL for tasks such as employee engagement, training needs analysis, and so on.

In turn, IIM-Vizag students pursuing MBA from the institute will be given industry exposure and training with HPCL. The MoU was signed by K Nagesh, General Manager (HR), HPCL, and Prof. Neena Pandey, Coordinator (Administration), IIM-V and were attended by the IIMV faculty members and senior executives of HPCL.

Prof M Chandrasekhar, Director of IIM-Vizag, at the event said “With several firsts to its credit, the Institute is on fast-track progress and growth.” He also described how the MoU will build a solid partnership between HPCL and IIMV. He discussed IIMV’s many distinguishing achievements as well as the institute's unique position within the IIM community.

Director (HR), HPCL, Dr Pushp Kumar Joshi, who attended the program as the chief guest, said, “As part of the collaborative endeavour, the senior executives of HPCL and faculty in IIMV will work together to strengthen the multi-faceted academia-industry relationship and contribute to the field of action research”.

Dr Joshi further stated that HPCL would be interested in developing digital skills, business competencies, and the application of advanced sciences such as neurology, behavioural sciences, consciousness, and psychology to HR and organisational practises, for which IIMV might be a knowledge partner.

Dr Joshi encouraged IIM-V to use HPCL and its resources as a lab for its applied research work, and the two firms can collaborate to co-create knowledge for use at HPCL as well as case studies in academics.

The MoU also includes the production of case studies by IIM-V in the fields of industry impact and HPCL operational effectiveness. IIM-Vizag will also conduct impact studies in areas such as corporate social responsibility, public relations, training and development, and others in order to assess the efficacy and influence of HPCL's many programmes and initiatives.

Of late, IIM-V and IIITDM-K collaborated to explore joint programmes and research projects. Through this collaboration, both the institutes will introduce programs offering a judicious blend of design and manufacturing skills together with an aim at industry professionals and practitioners for production and project management.
