New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay’s new hostel 17 has been inaugurated by Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship on March 27, 2022. The hostel has been developed entirely through the fundings from Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) with an approximate cost of INR 117 crore.
During the inauguration ceremony of IIT Bombay’s hostel, Pradhan has stated that the IITs are ‘India’s Instrument of Transformation’ and therefore, the institute must obtain a leading role in spreading new frontiers of knowledge and nurturing the future developers. This is to bring positive changes in human lives and attract both the national and international students. He has also added that the campus atmosphere is also praiseworthy in bringing positivity among the students.

“India has shown that it has solutions to complex global problems. Students at IIT Bombay should map the country’s requirements for the next 50 years, including in the areas of disaster management, clean energy, & sustainability and work towards fulfilling those requirements,”, Pradhan further added.
While discussing the fast-changing geopolitical realities and the disastrous impact of the COVID pandemic, Pradhan has urged the audience to think about a series of new opportunities.
“I underscored the role of IIT Bombay in ensuring a prominent role for India in the new emerging global order”, he further added.
While he visited the institute, the Minister also paid tribute to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Baba Saheb BR Ambedkar at the campus. Along with Dr. Pawan K Goenka, Chairperson, Director Professor Shubhashis Chaudhuri and other senior faculty members, the Minister also overviewed a presentation on IIT Bombay about the institute’s plan on implementing the objectives of NEP 2020.
About IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay is one of the top 3 engineering colleges in India. It offers 139 courses in multiple subjects such as Engineering, Management, Pure Sciences and Humanities. The courses offered are at UG, PG, Doctoral levels. The institute also provides Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) through its online platform, IITBombayX. It includes 34 centres, 17 academic departments and 3 schools.
Among the programmes offered, B.Tech is the flagship programme of the institute. Candidates have to appear for the JEE Advanced Exam to seek admission to the B.Tech course.
The institute also offers 51 Continuing Education (CE) and Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) to the working professionals.
