New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, has recently flagged off DOST, a flex-fuel automotive vehicle. The vehicle is powered by environmental friendly DME or Dimethyl Ether- Diesel dual fuel.
Srivari Chandrasekhar, the Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has flagged off the vehicle at the institute.
DST funded the project and the researchers from the Energy Science and Engineering Department at IIT Delhi developed the engine technology for use of DME under the dual fuel mode.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) Research and Development (R&D) had earlier undertaken the endurance as well as the field trial tests and developed this engine oil. The technical support was provided by Ashok Leyland.
DME diesel is actually a greener fuel that reduces pollution and improves the fuel economy to a great extent. Therefore, IIT Delhi, IOCL R&D, Ashok Leyland and DST collaborated to develop the Diesel + DME fuel.
For the past few years, India has remained among the major emitters in the world and a significant portion of the harmful air pollutants come from automobiles.
A combination of diesel and 20% of DME under certain prescribed conditions can reduce the smoke by 70% and Nitrogen Oxide production by 20%. A study titled “Dimethyl Ether (DME): A New Alternative Fuel for Diesel Vehicle” published this information in the ‘Advanced Materials Research (Volumes 156-157)’ periodical.
