New Delhi Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar has partnered with the Uttar Pradesh Government Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) to aid and enable girl students at 746 KGBV (Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya) to take up STEM.
The program called ‘Curiosity’ has been specially designed by the Centre for Creative Learning at the IIT Gandhinagar to encourage girl students across the state to pursue science-based subjects. The initiative also plans to widen the scope for STEM education beyond textbooks and curriculum by incorporating more experiential learning opportunities for both students and teachers.
Accordingly, the Centre for Creative learning is producing around 100 modules focused on teaching methodologies for middle school science in a hands-on manner with the aid of toys and other DIY activities. The modules have been designed in Hindi for better comprehension by students.
Gaurav Kumar, who is leading this project commented that “The goal of these sessions is not just to cover the science curriculum but nudge them towards seeing science in their daily lives.”
These modules will be implemented in all the KGBV schools in three steps - first, online workshops will be held at all KGBV schools. In the second stage, a ‘Curiosity Box’ containing materials for hands-on activities will be distributed to teachers at these schools. In the third and last stage, workshops will be held face to face at all the KGBV schools in UP.
According to Shetrunjay Sharma, One of the district coordinators of this project provided his feedback, ‘“The biggest success of this program is that a curiosity towards Science is developing among the girls.”
The program also ran a special session on Women’s Day this year. During the event, stories of prominent women scientists were shared with students so as to further inspire them in pursuing careers in STEM.
