IIT Guwahati: Education Inaugurates Nanotechnology & Knowledge Centres; Check details


IIT Guwahati: Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan has inaugurated two major infrastructure projects, the state-of-the-art Centre for Nanotechnology (CNT) and Centre for Indian Knowledge System (CIKS) at IIT-Guwahati.

Both the projects at IIT Guwahati have been set up with objectives. The CNT aims to fulfil the future challenges and increase the academic collaboration with industry in nanotechnology. A major funding of INR 37 crores was obtained from the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for the construction of the building besides the equipment. 

The Centre for Nanotechnology (CNT) is well-equipped with Class-100 clean room facilities integrated with state-of-the-art fabrication, characterisation and testing laboratories.

A total of 25 advanced laboratories will be hosted by the CNT to focus on advancements in multi-disciplinary, scientific and translational research. 

Some of the primary outcomes expected from the Centre for Nanotechnology are as follows, 

  • Nano-enabled healthcare
  • Energy harvesting
  • LED prototypes
  • High-end R&D outputs
  • Devices and technologies
  • Start-ups / incubation ecosystem
  • Capacity building of highly skilled manpower in the field of nanofabrication and nanoelectronics, etc. 

Meanwhile, the Centre for Indian Knowledge System (CIKS) at IIT Guwahati will focus on preserving, documenting and sustaining the knowledge that is unique and different to India. 

Some of the top priorities of CIKS include Indian classical music, temple architecture, ceramic tradition, yoga, Sanskrit, traditional medicines, and special agricultural practices of North-East India, herbal plants of North-East as health food and metal work of Assam.

The researchers from different backgrounds will be encouraged to take part in the interdisciplinary research and education programmes at CIKS, which will enable them to evolve practices and technologies in various areas for sustainable growth and development. 

Besides, theEducation Minister Pradhan launches two hostels at the institute. The new Disang hostel has an additional 1,000 rooms to the existing capacity of hostels at IIT Guwahati. 

In contrast, the Dikhow hostel is the first on-campus hostel that will provide accommodation for project staffers as well. These hostels were constructed at an estimated cost of INR 132 crore, with an aim to enhance the capacity of IIT Guwahati.

During the inaugural session, Pradhan said that in today's interconnected world, the Centre for Nanotechnology will contribute to the knowledge and development of India along with the entire world.

The rich biodiversity of the northeast region provides a great scope for research that will be helpful to benefit the entire humanity. A number of policy directions in the NEP 2020 can be implemented to modernize the Indian education system, he said. 

Further, it's the government's responsibility to develop an educational hub in Guwahati by creating a cluster of institutions in the region, he added. 

The inaugural occasion was attended by the Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, who said that IIT Guwahati should focus and concentrate on development of entrepreneurship and generate more job creators, not only job seekers.
