IIT-Kanpur: Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur has begun a diploma programme in Geodesy i.e. the science of measuring the Earth. The Geodesy programme is launched under the Civil Engineering Department of IIT Kanpur.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur informed that the geodesy programme will focus on three core areas i.e. navigation & mapping, geodesy, and remote sensing & GIS. The candidates will have to pass the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in order to apply for the diploma in geodesy programme at IIT-Kanpur.

The admission to the geodesy programme is open to candidates from various backgrounds such as mathematics, physics, geoinformatics, mining, electrical and electronics, information technology, computer science, civil engineering, geography, environmental science, earth science, etc.
The diploma programme aims to inculcate news skillsets in working professionals from government institutions, faculty members, and researchers in academic institutions involved in teaching, research, and development.

The IIT Kanpur Director Abhay Karandikar discussing the newly launched programme informed that Geodesy is an arena where well-qualified technical human resources, geodetic infrastructure, and research activities are necessary at the national level for the fast-developments of infrastructural requirements in the country currently.
He further stated that the National Centre for Geodesy (NCG) has been developed to advance expertise in Geodesy and associated areas.
The candidates interested in earth science must note the applications of Geodesy in various fields :
- Monitoring Earthquake, Volcanic, Landslide, and Weather Hazard Recognition and Response
- Soil Health
- Water Resources and Drought Surveillance
- GPS timing and
- Autonomous Vehicle Development
- Oil Spill Clean-Ups
- Climate Change Including Monitoring the Polar Ice Cover
