New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kanpur has recently added two new departments in the field of Design, and Space Science and Astronomy on the campus ground. With this decision, the institute's total academic department count has now risen up to 20 in number.
The decision to launch new departments on the campus ground of IIT Kanpur was made during the Board of Governors meeting held on January 12, 2021. The proposal for the same was approved during the meeting after the authority reviewed the suggestions made by the institute.
The newly launched IIT Kanpur Department will focus on various domains of Space Science and Astronomy such as Space, Planetary, Astronomical Sciences and Engineering, and others. The department will work towards introducing various new initiatives on the campus.
Talking about the initiative, Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur said, “IIT Kanpur has been continuously revamping our curricula periodically to better suit the changing education ecosystem of the country and the setting up of new departments is also part of that process".
"The two new departments in the fields of Design, and Space Science and Astronomy will facilitate new research and innovation in these crucial sectors and would broaden up the ever-expanding horizon of research and learning practiced at IIT Kanpur" he added.
With the establishment of IIT Kanpur's Department of Space Science and Astronomy, the institute aims to bring engineers, astronomers, astrophysicists, and planetary scientists in a single platform where they can jointly work together.
The department will work towards meeting the growing requirements of areas related to the Space Science domain. Additionally, the department will offer various undergraduate and master’s degree programs to interested students on the campus ground.
In addition to the establishment of two new departments, the board members also approved the proposal of transforming the existing IIT Kanpur Design Program 2022 into a full-fledged department. With this, students will be offered education facilities in industry and research.
Following the transformation of Design Program 2022, IIT Kanpur is now planning on introducing a Bachelor of Design Program from batch 2023. Further details on the IIT Kanpur Admission process and course details will be shared soon by the institute.
