New Delhi: IIT Kanpur has received Rs 100 crores donation from Rakesh Gangwal, an ex-alumnus of IIT Kanpur and the co-founder of IndiGo. Gangwal also agreed to collaborate with the institute to establish a Medical Sciences and Technology School.

The ex-alumnus made a contribution to IIT Kanpur to aid in the establishment of the college. Apart from that, the IndiGo co-founder will join the school's Advisory Board.

Gangwal at the event also stated, "It is a privilege to be associated with such a noble endeavor with my alma mater. I am proud to see that the institution that has produced thousands of leaders across various sectors is now paving the way in the healthcare sector. More than ever, healthcare is intertwined with technological advances and this school will accelerate innovation in healthcare".
The Medical Sciences and Technology School is planned to begin in the next 10 years. The project will be carried out in two phases.
In Phase 1, a total built-up area of about 8,10,000 sq ft will be constructed, with an academic block, residential block, service block, a 500-bed super-speciality hospital, as well as Centers of Excellence, CoE for R&D activities. The first phase is expected to take 3 to 5 years.
The hospital's capacity will be increased to 1,000 beds in Phase 2 of the project, as will clinical departments and centers, research areas, and the incorporation of paramedical disciplines, alternative medicine, hospital administration, sports medicine, and public health programmes. The second phase is projected to take 7 to 10 years.
According to a press release, the establishment of the School of Medical Sciences and Technology is part of IIT Kanpur's effort to bring about a paradigm change in the country by combining medical research with technical advances.
