IIT Madras & University of Birmingham to Launch Joint Masters Programs


New Delhi: IIT Madras has joined hands with the University of Birmingham to jointly provide postgraduate programmes. Through these programmes, students will have the opportunity to pursue dual degrees while studying at the university and IIT Madras.

As per IIT Madras, the Vice Chancellor and Head of the University of Birmingham, Professor Adam Tickell, and Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras have inked an MoU to explore study areas like data science, energy systems, and biomedical engineering.

In order to encourage academics and researchers in these domains, IIT Madras and the University of Birmingham have also decided to create a collaborative research fund. The first combined master's programme is expected to be launched next year.

According to an official release from IIT Madras, the combined programmes will be administered at the campuses of both schools, and mutual acceptance of academic credits given by each university would result in the granting of a single degree certificate.

Tickell emphasised the significance of the partnership by saying, “These innovative joint postgraduate programmes between IIT Madras and University Birmingham will offer students the opportunity to pursue a world-class education at globally leading institutions in two countries, and to have their educational achievements recognised by both".

Professor Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Dean (Global Engagement), IIT Madras, elaborated on the significance of this collaboration by saying, "This is a terrific beginning for what we hope will be a long and fruitful connection with the University of Birmingham, striking multiple high notes".
