New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, has established an interdisciplinary water management and policy centre named ‘AquaMAP’ to solve issues related to water crisis in India.
Mahesh Panchangnula, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT Madras has expressed his thanks to alumni Parasuram Balasubramanian, CEO of Theme Work Analytics along with Krishnan Narayanan, President of IIT Madras Alumni Association (IITMAA) and President of Itihaasa Research and Digital for their generous contribution. Both of them have provided a seed grant commitment of Rs. 3 crore for two years to the centre.

In addition to the monetary help, they will also aid in the crafting of the five year plan, as per the official press release by IIT Madras.
The governing body of AquaMAP Centre will be supervised by the Director of IIT Madras. The principal investigator of AquaMAP is Ligy Philip, Professor at the Civil Engineering Department and the Dean of Planning at IIT Madras. Approximately 20 faculties from multiple other departments with reference to the water crisis will be working closely with Professor Philip.
“AquaMAP will collaborate with other IIT Madras water research centres such as Sutram, International Centre for Clean Water (ICCW) - IIT Madras, and PCoE on Water and Sustainability, and other partners in this endeavour. We hope to create referral sites that are global benchmarks in water security, water quality and sustainable water management,” she added to her statement.

IIT Madras AquaMap Centre: Primary Objectives
IIT Madras has established this centre primarily to battle the increasing water crisis in this country. Here are a few highlights of their goal and plans regarding the issue:
- To develop the capability to solve the real-life water crisis by offering solutions developed through scientific study

- To develop successful models on the basis of their study that can be used for water management and policy making across India
- To develop solutions for at least three water related problems in India
- To set up a hydro-informaticas lab
