New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras First Batch of B.Sc. Degree Programme, received their provisional Diploma Certificates on May 21, 2022. There were a total of 101 students. In addition to this event, the B.Sc. students also organised their first cultural and technical fest called “Paradox 2022”. The fest was held at the institute campus, from May 20 to 22, 2022.
More than 2000 students of IIT Madras from all over India, participated in the fest. Students pursuing this course from foreign countries also took part in the festivities. A grand total of 101 students including 17 students with less than INR 1 LPA, received their Diploma certificates.
“Out of the 101 students from the first batch, nearly 15 per cent are working professionals. While nine students are under 20 years old, three students are aged above 40. The students from the first batch hail from across the country including far-flung states like Meghalaya, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, and Jharkhand”, as stated by the institute.
About IIT Madras B.Sc. Degree in Programming and Data Sciences:
This programme can be considered as one of its kinds that has made it possible for students to study at IIT Madras without writing the JEE exam.
“This carefully designed programme allows multiple entries and exits. Learners can get a certificate after completion of foundation-level courses, two diplomas after the completion of second-level courses, and a BSc degree after completion of the final-level courses”, as the programme testimonial states.
Addressing the ceremony, IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti has commented on how the programme is becoming a benchmark for any online effort from the institute. This is also related to how by offering admission to this course, IIT Madras is attempting to make its education accessible to the interested candidates. The B.Sc. degree programme is definitely an example of that.
Department of Electrical Engineering Professor, Dr. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, the former Director at IIT Madras, also has commented on the success of the B.Sc. programme.
“The BSc program, which offers high quality learning experience, is going to become a very important part of higher education in the country. The Institute's aim is to give the highest quality education to the learners and I am sure that the learners of the course will definitely increase in the upcoming years”, as explained by Dr. Ramamurthi.
About “Paradox 2022”:
The fest was sponsored by Tiger Analytics, Tech Mahindra, Aditya Birla and Market.xyz. The fest incorporates a series of events such as professional talks, sports activities, hackathons, cultural events and workshops. The events were conducted so that the students could showcase their versatile talents.
Another key event of the fest took place on May 22, 2022. The top executives of major industries such as IBM, Walmart Global Tech India, TCS, Infosys, Latentview Analytics, Capgemini, participated in a panel discussion and interacted with the students attending.

“The students of BSc degree programme are quite diverse as they are from different professional backgrounds and hail from several countries from across the globe. Attending the fest with my fellow learners at IIT Madras campus was an amazing experience”, as stated by Krishna, a working professional based out of Abu Dhabi.
Proteeti Banerjee, a student from Kolkata also stated that the most exciting aspect of the event was to receive the chance to meet faculty members along with the instructors. The chance to explore the campus and participate in several events during the fest was also very welcoming.
