IIT Madras Hosts Event to Promote Sports among Differently-abled

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has hosted an event to promote and spread sports awareness amongst the differently abled persons on December 11, 2022.

IIT Madras organised the event, 'Sports 4 All' every year on December 03 in line with the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.

The institute reported that a total of 580 participants from across the country attended the event, including 255 volunteers, members of the public, and caregivers. The goal of the event was to make sports and games accessible to people with disabilities, provide cutting-edge assistive technology for use in sports and games, and emphasise the value of sports.

IIT Madras Director professor V Kamakoti stated in a press release that one of the core objectives of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals is inclusion. Due to lack of accessibility to new solutions, people with disabilities are marginalised and left behind globally.

He said that sports and inclusive gross motor activities give people with disabilities the chance to engage in fitness activities that will enhance their physical and emotional well-being.

According to the press release, the National Institute for Persons with Multiple Disabilities, IIT Madras Research Park, Global Sports Mentoring Programme, a project of the U.S. The Department of State and University of Tennessee, and Decathlon are among the organisations that have partnered on the event.

Speaking about the event, Sujatha Srinivasan, professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and head, R2D2 and NCAHT, IIT-Madras said that in order to ensure the world is accessible and equitable, it is crucial for governments, educational entities, private and public sectors to collaboratively find transformative solutions for and with persons with disabilities in every walk of life.
