New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras has inaugurated the biggest hostel on its campus on February 21, 2022. The building is named after Indian river, like all the buildings within the area and called ‘Mandakini’.

The approximate cost of this IIT Madras project is INR 146.74 crore. An old building has been demolished and in its place, ‘Mandakini’ is situated now. This is a 10 story building. It includes 32,180 sq. ft. area and has managed to receive 4 star rating in a national rating system for Green Buildings, called ‘GRIHA’.

With this hostel, IIT Delhi will be able to include more than 1k students at a time.

IIT Madras ‘Mandakini’ Hostel Facilities:

As per the official notice by IIT Madras, the new hostel building includes solar panels and hot water system to reduce excessive energy consumption. Rainwater recharge pits are also included in the plan. Transplanted and mechanical ventilation are also being provided for the toilets. In addition to this, low energy and recycling materials have also been used for the construction of this building.

“We (the institute) take pride in providing top quality accommodation for our students within our campus”, as stated by Professor V. Kamakoti, Director at IIT Madras, during the inauguration ceremony.

Praising the initiative and the end result, Professor S A Sannasiraj, Chairman, Engineering Unit of IIT Madras, has also commented on the building.

“The hostel was built without much delay in spite of the C19 pandemic in the last 2 years and it caters to all the home and relaxation needs of the students,”, as stated by the Professor.

PwD category students will also be able to utilise this hostel as it is built in accordance with the required guidelines. From staircases, ramps to lifts- the hostel includes all of these and the 10 accommodations reserved for the PwD students includes attached bathrooms too.
