New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has introduced a course in Mathematics named “Out of the Box Thinking”. The course is open to all Indian and foreign citizens. It will be delivered in online mode and will focus on multiple approaches to problem-solving.

IIT Madras will close the applications on June 24, 2022. It is open to all in India as well as in foreign countries. Classes will be held from July 1 in online mode. Interested candidates can take admission for the course through their official website, pravartak.org.in

As per reports from the institute, the course is held through IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, a sec 8 company of IIT Madras, free of cost. Candidates just need to pay a nominal fee for the examination and get the grade certificate. One can download the brochure of the course here. 

Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said “This course is first-of-its-kind in India and will make a major impact in the days to come. We will see the benefits of this course in next few years. The course is being offered free of cost. It course will greatly benefit the School and College students, especially those residing in rural India.”

The Prof. also added, “Out of the box’ thinking is solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic. In this course, such thinking is emphasized through rediscovering the known and unknown facts of mathematics logically with an interesting broader perception of the manner of doing it.”

The course is free of cost and will be held from July 1, 2022. The last day to register for the course is June 24, 2022. The duration of the course is 3 months. The final examination will be conducted at selected centres across Indian cities and will be informed by the institute. 

The course is easily accessible to students, working professionals, and researchers. The institute is targeting millions of schools and colleges, besides working professionals and researchers. The course will be taught by the Mathematics educator and director-founder of Aryabhatta Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Sadagopan Rajesh.

The grading system on the certificate will be as the following: 

  • Grade A- 85% and above
  • Grade B- 70% to less than 85% 
  • Grade C- 55% to less than 70% 
  • Grade D- 40% to less than 55%

Sadagopan Rajesh has talked about the initiative, “If we approach mathematics with discipline and passion not necessarily in a formal way but realize the subject with more logical and analytical reasoning, we can broaden our thinking. The important output is the development of skills which are essential to fit and effectively contribute in a rapidly changing technological world.”

IIM Madras Out of the Box Thinking: Registration and Certification

  • The course is free and will be taught online.
  • Every year course registration will open in the months of April/November for June and January sessions, respectively. 
  • Students need to register for their final exam with a nominal fee for certification. 
  • Final exam will be held at selected centres across the Indian cities. 
  • Certificates will be issued based on evaluation by IITM Pravartak for students who take the examination.
