IIT Madras Launches Free Online Course on Machine Learning


New Delhi: IIT Madras has launched a free online course on machine learning that will cover fundamental ideas of machine learning from a mathematical perspective. Interested candidates can apply by submitting their applications at onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in till January 30, 2023. 

As per IIT Madras, the program will be taught by Professor Balaraman Ravindran from Computer Science Department. The course is designed for equipping students with the knowledge to increase the availability of data from varied sources with the help of machine learning and data analytics.

The IIT Madras Online Course 2022 will be conducted from January 23, 2023 to April 14, 2023 for all registered candidates. The online application window to apply for admission to the free online course is open on the official website of the NPTEL Swayam portal at onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in.

Informing about the course, the official website reads, "With the increased availability of data from varied sources there has been increasing attention paid to the various data-driven disciplines such as analytics and machine learning".

"In this course, we intend to introduce some of the basic concepts of machine learning from a mathematically well-motivated perspective. We will cover the different learning paradigms and some of the more popular algorithms and architectures used in each of these paradigms" it further reads.

The course curriculum of the course will cover topics like probability theory, linear algebra, convex optimisation, linear regression, multivariate regression, subset selection, shrinkage methods, principal component regression, partial least squares, etc. 

Additionally, participants will be introduced to linear classification, logistic regression, and linear discriminant analysis. earning theory, introduction to reinforcement learning, optional videos, neural networks, Statistical Decision Theory, and Gaussian Mixture Models among other topics.
