IIT Madras Offers Full Scholarships to Over 100 BS Data Science

New Delhi: IIT Madras has declared a full scholarship for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Data Science & Applications at the institute in a collaboration with Cargill, a multinational food and agribusiness company based in the United States.

The BS in Data Science Applications program at IIT Madras was introduced in June 2020; it has now finished six academic terms and is entering its third year. The course curriculum of this program won the Silver prize for best online course at QS-Wharton Reimagine Education Awards. 

According to the institution, each year, about 7,500 new students enrol in the program, and between 25% and 30% of them come from families with a yearly income of less than Rs 5 lakh.

More than 100 students from low-income backgrounds will be chosen for the Cargill scholarship. Such candidates will be chosen under the requirements for the Merit-cum-Means Scholarship.

So far, over 22,000 individuals have been accepted into the program, and roughly 17,000 are now enrolled. IIT Madras stated that 4,500 students are enrolled in certificate programs, compared to 195 students enrolled in degree programs.

Applicants can enrol and depart the IIT Madras BS Degree in Data Science and Applications through various entry and exit points and earn a certificate or diploma degree. The institute will award individuals who successfully complete all four levels with a BS Degree in Data Science and Applications degree.

According to the official statement, "this program is more accessible and has an inclusive qualifying procedure, providing learners throughout the country exposure to IIT quality education, however unlike fiercely competitive Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE), in which only a few people qualify."

Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT Madras said, "Deserving and brilliant students from all around India will have the chance to pursue their ambition to study at a prominent school like IIT Madras thanks to the Cargill Scholarship”. 

He added, “Several students are already utilising bank loans or other government grants and scholarships and come from households with first-generation college graduates, workers at minimum wage, farmers, etc. Thanks to this initiative, the student's household will be significantly less financially burdened."
