IIT Madras Prof Bags ‘VinFuture Prize’ for Developing Low-Cost Filtration System

New Delhi: One of the highest annual rewards ever given out globally, the VinFuture Grand Prize is valued at US$3 million. The winners were chosen from approximately 1,000 submissions submitted in 71 different countries. In order to manufacture clean water, Prof. Thalappil Pradeep discovered sustainable and cheap nanomaterials.

The "VinFuture Prizes" were given to Professor Thalappil Pradeep of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras for his creation of a low-cost filtration device to remove heavy metals like arsenic from groundwater.

This could provide access to clean water for hundreds of millions of people who currently live in areas with dirty water. On December 20, 2022, in Hanoi, Vietnam, at the award event, Prof. Pradeep was given the VinFuture Prize. His technologies are providing clean water to more than 1.2 crore people, and he has already been honoured with the Padma Shri, Nikkei Asia Prize, and Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water, among many other awards.

One of the highest annual rewards ever given out globally, the VinFuture Grand Prize is valued at US$3 million. It also includes three special awards, each worth US$ 500,000, presented to innovators from developing nations, innovators from women, and innovators who have made remarkable contributions to developing sectors. The winners were chosen from approximately 1,000 submissions submitted in 71 different countries.

Prof. Pradeep, Institute Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras, thanked the awards committee for recognising this research and added, "This recognises everyone who worked with me, everyone who has benefited from the effort, and those who facilitated the translation of our work. I am also conscious of the enormous gap that needs to be closed before everyone can get clean water. I'm hoping that this acknowledgment will make it easier to fulfil that goal. I'm grateful to the institution that provided me everything. I give thanks to my nation for forcing me to stand up.
