Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi welcomed the new B.Tech. 2020 batch through an online orientation event. A total of 330 students from various parts of the country enrolled in the 2020–2024 session.
As per the record, 330 students joined IIT Mandi this year in B.Tech. courses, out of which 68 are girls and 262 are boys in comparison to 53 girls and 209 boys last year.
While welcoming the fresh batch of students, Prof. Ajit K. Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Mandi, stated, “Nested in the mountains of Shivalik, IIT Mandi has developed a beautiful state of art research facilities, classrooms, as well as hostels and sports complexes.”
He added, “The unique curriculum of IIT Mandi includes courses like reverse engineering and Interactive Socio-Technical Practicum (ISTP) which help students to be empathetic towards societal problems and learn to provide engineering solutions. Centers like IIT Mandi Catalyst nurture students to grow up in an entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

The institute also launched a special 5 Week Induction Programme (5WIP) in a phased manner this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The first phase of the induction program commenced today, 23rd November 2020.
The 5WIP is an extraordinarily fully faculty-mentored induction program that aims to give training to the new students to improve their skills and proficiency, to help them in the transition from school to college, and to appreciate the significance of engineering's societal connection.

The first phase of this course will consist of introductory sessions on English and communication, discovering engineering, computer proficiency, and soft skills.
The next phase of 5WIP will begin once the students return to the campus. It will focus on the creative arts and sports as well as on the holistic development of the students.
Mentioning the aspects of IIT Mandi’s curriculum, Dr. Pradeep Parameswaran, Dean (Academics), IIT Mandi, said, “An important aspect of the curriculum is the integration of innovation and design into the learning process. This is achieved through a model of learning by doing, which is built into the curriculum.”
He further added, “At IIT Mandi, the students are exposed to a broad range of knowledge and skills that will enable them to perform well in tomorrow’s increasingly complex and inter-dependent world.”

Apart from this, B.Tech. the program offered by the institute has several additional features such as a Minor program, B.Tech. Honors, etc.
The Minor program will help students in gaining expertise in areas like Management, Intelligent Systems, Applied Physics, and German language, outside the principal course discipline. Students can also enhance their credit score by choosing B.Tech. Honors. It is a fine way for the students to learn the entrepreneurial culture.
In addition, the institute has also achieved the target of female enrolment in undergraduate courses this year by enrolling 20.61 percent female students in the B. Tech program.
