New Delhi: IIT Roorkee signed a MoU with the Government agency Bureau of Indian Standards on Thursday, March 10, 2022. This is for the establishment of ‘BIS Standardisation Chair Professor’.
This collaboration between IIT Roorkee and BIS would be the very first standardisation chair established by BIS in any institute for activities on standardisation and conformity assessment.
IIT Roorkee and BIS Collaboration 2022: Focus Areas
The MoU is to facilitate the research and development, teaching and training in the field of standardisation and conformity assessment. Here are the key focus areas:
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Earthquake Engineering
- Renewable energy projects
- Medical Biotechnology and Nanotechnology, Biomaterials
The collaboration is further to help students with understanding how standards can encourage and facilitate innovation. The partnership is also to groom the learners, making them well-prepared for their upcoming professional challenges.

IIT Roorkee offers 83 courses in the fields of Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Management. It’s flagship programme is B.Tech, with 13 specialisations. Candidates can apply to this course through the JEE Advanced rank between 32 to 7000.
Along with the 83 courses, IIT Roorkee is also known to offer special PG programmes to Afro-Asian Region students. These programmes are offered by the Water Resources Development and Management (WRDM) and Department of Hydrology. Till the current date, the department has trained more than 2469 students as Service Engineers and Agricultural Scientists from 48 countries. These courses are sponsored by the Government of India.
