According to IIT Bombay, the registrations for the new subjects are much higher than the existing nine Subjects. However, Mechanical and Civil engineering still remained the top choice for GATE 2021 even after some drop in the applications was observed.

IIT Bombay has offered a new opportunity for candidates to apply for more than one paper (although only in a particular set of combinations). This new attribute leads to the rise of the number of applications for lesser popular courses, including Instrumentation Engineering (IN) and Engineering Sciences (XE).

XE registrations for 2021 are 28,300. It was only 4790 applications for last year. Additionally, the IN registrations have increased by 130% for this year.

Professor Deepankar Choudhury, organizing chairman for GATE 2021, stated, “This year since we allowed a combination of two subjects, the number of applications in some subjects has increased. Students may get an MTech seat or a PSU job if they qualify in any one paper, based on the requirement.

Likewise, CAT, GATE, too, provides the job market opportunities for engineering graduates to some extent. Although, candidates don’t opt for GATE due to the slow economy.

Choudhury added, "There cannot be a direct correlation. Students take into account several factors. There is no age limit or a cap on the number of attempts.

He also said, “The success rate in GATE is also less than 20%, making it one of the toughest exams in India. So some may postpone it by a year. There is also a possibility that the numbers have reached the natural saturation level.”

The overall registrations for GATE have remained around nine lakh for some time now.
