New Delhi: Guwahati is soon to get a medical college which will provide admission to a minimum of 100 MBBS students per year. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid the foundation for this college.
During an official event, Sarma stated that the proposed Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital will include two campuses- one will be at Panbazar and the other at Kalapahar. The approximate expenditure will be Rs. 1000 crore.
“This new medical college will tremendously augment medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the state and fulfil the medical requirements of Guwahati and nearby areas”, as stated by Sarma.

The Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) at Panbazar and the Kalapahar TB Hospital will be upgraded further to work as the proposed sites of the new medical college. The entire project covers approximately 20 acres.
The Kalapahar campus of the new medical college will include 480 beds, 46 ICUs, 7 highly-equipped operation theatres and accommodation facility for 450 students and 100 interns.
Meanwhile, the MMCH campus will include 800 beds, 100 ICUs, cutting-edge diagnostic facilities, a dialysis unit and 11 OTs among the others.

“The state government is ramping up healthcare infrastructure in the state keeping in view the future demand and by the end of our present government's tenure, Assam will have 14 medical colleges,” Sarma added to his statement.
Possibly, Assam will witness the inauguration of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Changsari by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November, 2022.
Referring to how Assam has emerged as one of the top three most improved states in the incremental performance as per the NITI Aayog’s Health Index for 2019-20, Sarma has stated, how Guwahati is aiming towards becoming a hub of medical tourism in the South East Asia and one of the key ways to achieve it is to focus on the infrastructural development.
