NIT Sikkim to Get its Permanent Campus by 2024: MoS Education; Details Here


The National Institute of Technology (NIT), a permanent institution, is likely to be ready in the next three years. Union Education Minister Subhas Sarkar announced the news on a two-day tour to the state. 

NIT Sikkim has been working at a temporary college in Ravangla since its inception in 2010. The construction will be completed and the shift to the new everlasting NIT Sikkim campus will happen within the next two-and-half years.

The Minister was content that the Sikkim government has offered an excellent land area, of 100 acres, in Khamdong, East Sikkim, for the NIT campus construction. Among these 90 acres have already been acquired and the remaining 10 acres will be obtained shortly. The construction work will begin almost immediately after the formalities. In addition INR 500 crore has been set aside for this project.

The construction of the second phase of the Sikkim Central University’s campus in Yangyang in South Sikkim will also be finished within the next two and a half years. He also added that the first phase of the Sikkim University campus at Yangyang in South Sikkim has already been completed for INR 98 crore and EOI for the second phase for INR 300 crore has been published.

Minister on NEP Conference

Sikkim Central University celebrated its 14th Foundation Day this year. The National Education Policy (NEP) implementation and reorganization of private colleges in various fields and disciplines have been initiated by the Sikkim State. In addition, the introduction of a new curriculum for the elementary level and the enrolment of 15 to 18-year-old out-of-school children (OoSC) children in NIOS is in progress.

The Minister was taking part in a conference, organized by the Board of Open Schooling and Skill Education, Sikkim. In the national seminar, “NEP 2020: Towards India-Centred Holistic Inclusive Quality School Education”. He appreciated the Sikkim Legislative Assembly for the formation of the Board for the purpose of various academic needs of the secondary, senior secondary, and vocational education student groups.

Hemant Goyal, Chairman, BOSSE, Sikkim at the conference mentioned that it is the first board to be set up on the lines of the reforms proposed in NEP. In addition to 11 skill education trades,8 more trades will be added soon.
