New Delhi: NIT Surathkal along with the National Innovation Foundation conducted a one day workshop "Inspire-Manak" for state-level students from classes 6 to 10 at its campus on May 24, 2022.
NIT Surathkal mentored 63 students from across Karnataka, aged 10 to 15, who have been selected to compete in a nationwide exhibition and project competition under the Union government's Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) initiative.
The purpose of this competition was to encourage students to think critically to become innovators. Students had the opportunity to connect with professors and domain specialists of NIT Surathkal from many sectors such as agriculture, mechanical engineering, sensors and systems, and household mechanics throughout the workshop.
Arun M Isloor, professor, department of chemistry, coordinator of the workshop, said, “In order to convert their ideas into a prototype, and to showcase it in the best possible form, before the NLEPC jury, the students need guidance and mentoring. NITK will offer them the same”.
He added that the majority of the students are from rural regions and have the most innovative ideas, which will definitely surprise anyone. Mechanical engineering, agricultural, sensor-based, home, and environment were the five areas in which the 63 concepts were classified. Each category is led by a member of the NIT Surathkal faculty who will work with every student to improve his or her ideas.
Students submitted a variety of unique concepts, including a pendulum-based water pump, an electricity-free refrigerator, smart mailboxes, contactless sewage cleaning and others, all of which may be useful for labour-intensive or tedious tasks.
The workshop was inaugurated by chief guest K C Rao, director of Mangaluru's Pilikula Regional Science Centre, and Udaykumar R Yaragatti, director (in-charge), NIT Surathkal. They discussed the significance of innovations in the national interest in the first session. Students connected with the NIT Surathkal academic members as well as domain experts from various disciplines.
