New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has warned the students to be alert against the online medical courses being offered by several Chinese universities.
The commission has issued a notification advising that medical aspirants aiming to pursue medical or any other courses from foreign universities are required to “exercise due diligence”.
Duly signed by Dr Sandhya Bhullar, Secretary, the NMC has issued the warning explaining that the Ministry of External Affairs has noticed that some universities from the People’s Republic of China are now releasing notices for admissions to MBBS programmes for the current and upcoming academic sessions 2022-23.
However, taking into account the travel restrictions imposed due to the ongoing pandemic Covid-19, these Chinese universities are claiming to offer online medical courses.
As a result, any prospective medical aspirant must be aware that the Government of People’s Republic of China has imposed strict travel restrictions in the view of COVID-19 and suspended all visas since November 2020, the NMC notice read.

Meanwhile, a huge number of international students including Indian students have not been able to return to China to continue their studies owing to the strict travel restrictions.
The NMC has clarified in its notification stating that as per the extant rules, it does not identify or approve any medical course which is conducted only in online mode.
Thus, keeping in mind about the strict travel restrictions in China, the students are advised to exercise due diligence in choosing where to pursue their medical education from, the notification read.
Further, the NMC has informed the students to refer to Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) regulations before applying to any such online medical course, or even while planning to seek admission in any institutions in China or other foreign institutions.
Earlier this week, the NMC announced the fees of 50% of the seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities will be at par and reduced to the fees in the government medical colleges in the respective states and union territories.
