Tamil Nadu Govt Announces to Provide INR 1,000 as Assistance to Girl Students

New Delhi: In order to encourage more female students to pursue higher education without financial constraints, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a monthly deposit of INR 1,000 in the bank accounts of girl students.

Announcing the plans, the finance minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan told the assembly that approximately 6 lakh girls will be benefited from this initiative.

While presenting the Budget 2022-23, the minister said that a total of INR 698 crore has been allotted for this scheme.

According to the announcement, all the female students from classes 6 to 12 studying in government schools would be provided with INR 1,000 as monthly deposit till the uninterrupted completion of their undergraduate degree courses, diploma and ITI courses

The students would also be eligible for this scheme in addition to other scholarships, the Minister said.

Identifying the low enrolment ratio of girls from government schools to pursue higher education, the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme is being transformed into Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance Scheme, Palanivel said.

However, the implementation of the existing schemes of EVR Maniammaiyar Memorial Widow's Daughter Marriage Assistance Scheme, Dr. Dharmambal Ammaiyar Memorial Widow Remarriage Assistance Scheme, Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Memorial Inter-Caste Marriage Assistance Scheme, and Annai Teresa Orphan Girls Marriage Assistance Scheme would continue without any change, said the Minister.

In other news, the state government selected BIM Trichy, as its academic partner for the recently introduced Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Fellowship Programme (TNCMFP)

All the participants will receive PG Certificate in Public Policy and Management with an opportunity to enrol for PhD with due credit transfer upon the successful completion of the 2 year-long programme.
