The Upgrade of PEC as Puducherry Technological University gets Presidential Nod

After getting the proposed bill passed by the Puducherry Government and receiving the Presidential nod, the Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC) will now be upgraded as a technological University.

The Lt Governor of the Union Territory will be the Chancellor of the Puducherry Technological University and the secretary to the territorial government (Higher Education) will be the virtue of his office as the Pro-Chancellor.

This transition from an autonomous QIP center to a University status represents an ideal growth of the state institute. 

One of the officials is of the opinion that the Puducherry Government still has to constitute a search committee for appointing a vice-chancellor and complete other modalities of the newly upgraded university.

Pondicherry Engineering College Principal S.Kothandaraman said, "Reconstruction as a University will provide greater autonomy in curriculum redesign, tapping grants and also achieving international academic collaborations."

He further divulged that over a decade PEC had been empowered with funding under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP). Now that it has been upgraded to PTU, it will be a self-sustained University for which the Government will sanction limited grants and PTU will have to generate its own revenue. 

The Puducherry Technological University Act does not specify the seat reservation, if any. Currently, 85% of seats are filled in by Puducherry students and the remaining 15% by the Government of India. The PTU is yet to frame the curriculum, the number of seats, and fee to be charged.

PEC Principal also believes that in the prevailing education scenario, the aspiration of educational centres has shifted from affiliating institutions to standalone institutions of excellence.
