UGC Approved University of Madras’s Distance Education B.Ed Program; Details here

Madras University Admission 2021: University Grants Commission gave a nod to the University of Madras’s Distance Education two-year B.Ed Program on January 18, 2021.

The proposal by the Madras University was made in 2017 under the guidance and supervision of Vice-Chancellor P Duraismy. However, due to the university’s non-compliance with the UGC norms, the proposal was postponed.

Furthermore, the Madras University got approval from the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE) back in 2019 but had to wait for the nod from the UGC.

An Official added,” We got the approval in 2019 but in 2020 due to the pandemic we were not able to offer the program, very few universities managed to get the approval for the B.Ed program, We applied last October and received approval today.”

As reported, approximately 500 students will enroll with the Madras University for the B.Ed program. The university is set to intake students for B.Ed twice a year i.e June and January.

“However the pandemic caused a delay in the session, the next session will likely be commenced from February onwards,” Official added. For the University to commence with the admission process, it has to still undergo and file some paperwork.

Furthermore, the Madras University already has permission to provide 37 programs from IDE, including 15 undergraduate and 22 postgraduate courses in English and Tamil as well.

According to the official, the UGC approval is provisional and depends on the University’s response to the queries disclosed by the UGC.

Additionally, the UGC has also approved six more Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses, which include geography, medical sociology, and music.

Substitute teachers and Temporary faculty will undertake the function of the B.Ed courses, some faculty have also been substituted from other departments according to the NCTE norms.
