UGC Arranges Online Workshops for Universities & Colleges on Intellectual Property Rights


New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed the universities and colleges to arrange an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) awareness training programme for a better and thorough understanding of the patent filing procedure. UGC in collaboration with the Education Ministry is planning to train one million candidates in IPR filing by August 15, 2022.

UGC and the Ministry of Education organised a ‘Launch of Online Workshop for Universities and Colleges on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)’ on January 17, 2022. This was part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav’ to celebrate the achievements of India and its people. UGC organised this workshop in collaboration with DPIIT & Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM). 

The resources will be provided by the office of the CGPDTM and there will be a separate training session for the successfully identified MTs. 

In this connection, all the participants, coordinators and also the MTs will be conferred upon certificate by the office or the CGPDTM upon offline/online participation in awareness/training programme under the NIPAM”, as stated by the UGC notice.

Professor Rajnish Jain, Secretary, UGC, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the important effect of IPR on the country’s knowledge pool. Smt. Neeta Prasad, Joint Secretary (ICC & Vig.), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, also stressed the importance of IPR as the foundation of innovation, new research and continued creativity. 

The keynote address was delivered by Shri Rajendra Ratnoo, Joint Secretary, DPIIT & CGPDTM, Ministry of Commerce & Industry. During his speech, he focused on how important the partnership between the professional industry, academia and the IPR is for the country’s welfare. Further, he stated that innovation and constant creation in art and science need to be promoted and the heritage needs to be rigorously protected. 

The inaugural session was followed by the technical session which was addressed by experts from the field of IP that gave an overview of the theme.

An overview of the IPR was provided by Dr Usha Rao, Assistant Controller of Patents & Designs. In addition to the overview, she also described the different types of IPR along with their governing bodies. 

Vice-Chancellors of universities and college principals were requested to arrange the training programme on IPR as per the issues discussed during the online workshop. They were asked to nominate one faculty member from their institution to seek the training of Master Trainer in IPR. They were to send their requests under NIPAM. 

Dr Surendar Singh, Additional Secretary, UGC, concluded the workshop with a vote of thanks.
