New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has instructed all the higher education institutions, HEIs, to award degrees to all successful students within 180 days.
The commission has asked the universities to award course degrees to the students within 180 days from the date of declaration of their results and eligibility as per the UGC (Grant of Degrees and Other Awards by Universities) Regulations, 2008.
The commission wrote a letter to all the vice-chancellors of universities and principals of colleges saying that it will take strict actions against the universities failing to award degrees in accordance with the UGC regulations.
The decision was taken by the Commission after it received a large number of grievances/ complaints/ RTIs/ queries from students enrolled in different programs of study offered by the higher education institutions (HEIs) regarding the delay in awarding the course degrees.
According to the UGC regulation, the degree award date/s will be within 180 days of the date/s by which the students are likely to qualify and become eligible for them.
The commission has highlighted the regulations against the backdrop of a large number of grievances from students regarding the delay of degrees. It said that the students intending to pursue higher education or employment are facing difficulties due to the delay in awarding degrees.
The UGC letter stated that it's essential for a student to get a degree in time after having successfully completed the program.
Therefore, the commission has requested all the higher education institutions to follow the UGC regulation and award degrees to eligible and successful students within the prescribed time.
Further, the HEIs are also directed to issue the provisional degrees along with the final year transcripts to students.
Recently, the UGC, AICTE, and Department of Higher Education have begun planning for the establishment of the country's first Digital University, which will be set up with an aim to have students from all over India with access to world-class universal education and a tailored learning experience right at their doorstep.
