New Delhi: University Grants Commission (UGC) ordered colleges to post the whole texts of PhD theses on Shodhganga. Following the official notice, it would be easier to gather accurate information on the number of PhD students who have graduated and contributed to the creation of a powerful database of research done in India.
The announcement also stated that quick access and archiving of Indian doctoral theses will be ensured as a result. As per the notice the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) uses the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) to yearly rank colleges and universities.
Therefore, among the sub-parameters considered for rating HEls under "Graduation Outcomes" of the NIRF will include the number of PhD students who graduated, according to the notification.
All colleges have been requested by the UGC to embrace the Shodhganga initiative right away and upload the student's full-text theses that have already been published on the platform. The repository will be used to extract information on the number of PhD graduates in 2019, 2020, and 2021 for the NBA's 2023 India Ranking.
Shodhganga is a collection of theses and dissertations in the complete text. Deriving accurate data on the number of Ph.D. students who graduated will be made easier by institutions submitting the full text of their student's Ph.D. theses to Shodhganga.
Additionally, it will contribute to the development of India as a powerful centre for research. In addition to ensuring accessibility and storage of Indian doctoral theses, the online accessibility of electronic theses via centrally managed digital repositories would also contribute to improving the standard of research.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the UGC already has made it mandatory to submit Ph.D. theses on Shodhganga through the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2016 "the notification is read.
