UPES, Dehradun Announces New Deans for School of Engineering & School of Modern Media; Read to Know

University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun has appointed two new deans, Dr Gurvinder Singh Virk and Dr Nalin Mehta for the School of Engineering and School of Modern Media respectively. The new appointments will be effective from January 2021. 

Both the new deans of UPES, Dr. Mehta and Dr, Virk will be responsible to drive academic excellence, faculty engagement and development, industry outreach, and other aspects.

Dr Sunil Rai, Vice-Chancellor of the UPES, while welcoming the two new deans said that the whole UPES is delighted to have Dr. Virk and Dr. Mehta in the journey of overall student development through academic excellence.

The vast experience of both Virk and Mehta in their respective industries will help students immensely in on-off campus experiences as well as curriculums and industry outreach, added Rai.

UPES: Who is Dr. Mehta, The New Dean of School of Engineering?

Before being appointed as a Dean of School of Modern Media at UPES, Dr. Nalin Mehta served as the Executive Editor of The Times of India. He has also worked as Consulting Editor for the Time Times of India and the Managing Editor for an English TV news channel India Today. 

An award-winning social scientist, Dr. Mehta has also authored some exceptionally renowned books like India on Television, which also won the prestigious Asian Publishing Award for Best Book on Asian Media in 2009, and Behind a Billion Screens, which got shortlisted as a Business Book of the Year in 2015 by Tata Literature Live.

Dr. Mehta has also worked as a professor at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore and served senior positions at various prestigious organizations such as Global Fund, Geneva, Switzerland and United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS).

A PhD holder from La Trobe University, Melbourne in Politics, Dr. Mehta has also secured MA in International Relations from University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. He has also completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Journalism from the University of Delhi. 

UPES: Who is Dr. Virk, The New Dean of School of Modern Media

Specialised in Control Systems and Robotics, Dr. Gurvinder Singh Virk has a degree in Electrical Engineering. He also carries specialized knowledge in model-based, control, intelligent embedded systems, evolutionary systems and neural networks. 

A trustee and the treasurer of the CLAWAR Association Limited, United Kingdom, the organization that encourages advancements in the fields of education and science for the benefit of masses in robotics and such associated technologies, Dr. Virk has also served as a Chairman and CEO of Endo Energy Systems Limited.

Dr. Virk, throughout his career, has been associated with various prestigious universities such as South Bank University, University of Lincoln, London, IIT Ropar, Massey University, New Zealand.

A PhD holder from the Imperial College, London, Dr Virk has studied at the University of Manchester for Electronic & Electrical Engineering.
