Is the hostel in IIEST Shibpur mandatory?

HS
Harshita Sinha Posted On : March 14th, 2021
B.E from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2020)

No. It is not mandatory. The college allows you to have full freedom on whether you want to live in the hotel or outside. If someone has a problem with hostel life he/she can stay outside. But if you do not take hostels for a year you are going to miss a lot of things in life.

The main crux of college life lies in a hostel and it is better to join the hostel for the first 2 years. Also, it is easier to maintain the 8–5 classes from hostels and after the whole day tiring classes you can hang with your friends, play on the two grounds or go to the gym.

Does IIEST Shibpur have a chance of becoming an IIT?

AR
Arnav Roy Posted On : October 18th, 2023
Lives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

The Bengal Engineering College (BEC) Shibpur has a rich legacy of its own. It was unfortunate that BEC opted for the IIEST tag in 2014.

Becoming an IIT won’t be the best for IIEST Shibpur. The internal governance of IITs is completely different. Becoming one of them will be a great blow to the autonomy of IIEST. This autonomy was already compromised when the college acquired the IIEST tag.

But the chances of IIEST becoming an IIT are very faint. Bengal already has an IIT of its own, and the chances of another institute acquiring this status are negligible at present.

Is IIEST Shibpur better than College of Engineering, Pune?

SG
Sanchita Ghose Posted On : October 18th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST)

Both COEP and IIEST Shibpur are heritage colleges of India. COEP was established in 1854, and IIEST in 1856. Here are some differences between the two-

  • Location- COEP is located in the heart of Pune city. Pune will expose you to numerous opportunities that you couldn’t have otherwise accessed in small towns and cities. IIEST is located in Howrah, 15 minutes away from Kolkata city. Kolkata offers amazing food, ambiance, and exposure.
  • Research- COEP isn’t inclined towards research, and its students mostly aim for good placements. This is a drawback if you want to pursue higher studies in the future. IIEST Shibpur is one of the best colleges for research. In this regard, it stands just below IISc and old IITs.
  • Placements- COEP offers better placements, especially for CS/IT. The research-oriented environment of IIEST affects its placements to a certain extent. Coal India, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Texas Instruments and PwC are some of the companies that visit IIEST for placements.
  • Extracurriculars- COEP has really good extracurricular facilities. It even boasts of a boat club. IIEST Shibpur has fewer extracurricular facilities. However, since being updated to an Institute of National Importance, it has witnessed an increase in clubs, societies, and events. Some of these are- the Kolkata Comic Carnival, TEDx, and the Astronomy Club.

Both the colleges have their strengths and weaknesses. You should choose between them based on your personal preference.

Are the teachers of IIEST Shibpur very strict?

AS
Arina Seth Posted On : March 16th, 2021
B.Tech Electrical Engineering.

My brother pursued Mechanical Engineering from IIEST Shibpur. IIEST, Shibpur Mechanical Department has an excellent set of faculties, but some of them are known to be a little strict. But, their temper and strictness depend on how you behave with them and how much attention you pay in their lectures. Otherwise, they are found to be completely student-friendly.

The strictness of the professors is listed below in decreasing order.

  • Santanu Kumar Karmakar - He seems to be very strict.
  • Somnath Chakrabarti
  • Shyamal Chatterjee
  • Aritra Ganguly
  • Apurba Kishore Dutta
  • Debasis Datta
  • Bijan Kumar Mondal
  • Achin Kumar Chowdhuri
  • Sisir Kumar Guha
  • Sudip Ghosh
  • Partha Pratim Dey
  • Subhas Chandra Mondal
  • Uttam Rana
  • Ashim Guha
  • Bidyut Kumar Bhattacharya
  • Rathindra Nath De - Most benevolent and calm.

You should note that this list does not reflect their teaching style or knowledge by any means. It is completely based on how strict they are about attending the classes regularly. Hope the information given in the answer is helpful.

VJ
Vikas Juneja Posted On : October 18th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur

Here are some details regarding safety at the boys’ hostels of IIEST Shibpur-

  1. The security at hostel entrances makes sure no non-resident enters the premises without permission.
  2. The hostel rooms have a door and window, and both of these have latches from the inside.
  3. You’ll have to bring your own door lock and share the keys with other roommates.
  4. Menial thefts are quite common within the hostels. Take care of your stuff like toothpaste, bucket, washing powder, mirror, etc.
  5. Mobile and Laptop thefts are unheard of, but it is better to be cautious.
  6. The electric boards are earthed, and thus safe.

This is some basic information regarding your query. The boys’ hostels at IIEST are as safe as most college hostels. You’ll have to be a bit cautious about your personal belongings though.

Which is better, go for IIEST Shibpur for civil or drop a year for an MBBS?

BG
Bhumi Goswami Posted On : April 12th, 2021
Studies at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2018)

One of my friends was in the same situation last year. He got IIEST Shibpur Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Civil Engineering along with a rank of 1383 in West Bengal State Merit List of NEET for MBBS admission converted with a mark of 462.

  • In West Bengal State counseling he received R Ahmed Dental College in the 3rd round.
  • He refused the seat in KPC Medical College as he knew that his parents will not be able to pay his fees of 8 lakhs over 4.5 years. As he was not interested in Civil so he continued with Metallurgy and Materials Engineering.
  • During his 1st semester, he again started preparing for NEET but figured out later that the course pressure at IIEST Shibpur is too much and with so much to study for NEET, he was just falling apart.
  • His CGPA was not good as it was only 8.67 and ultimately decided not to go for NEET as his father advised him to concentrate on IIEST and give up on his dreams of becoming a doctor.
  • It came as a shock but later he realized that preparing for NEET all over again alongside maintaining a proper CGPA at IIEST is doing more harm than good to his career.
  • He felt that he should have taken the drop in the beginning but he was not ready to take any risk and IIEST Shibpur being a renowned college he was not ready to leave it.

So, if you want to become a doctor and serve people and if it's the long-cherished dream of pursuing MBBS then you should leave IIEST and better prepare for NEET again. Different people will have different views regarding the decision of leaving a good college like IIEST but in the end, it completely depends upon your goals.

Should I leave IIEST Shibpur for IISER Bhopal engineering sciences?

SS
Sukanya Saha, Posted On : November 9th, 2021
M.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2019)

This completely depends on your choice and preferences. The only thing you should take into account is how the course will benefit your career ahead.

  • IIEST Shibpur and IISER Bhopal offer different career paths.
  • IIEST Shibpur is an engineering college and will push you most probably into a technical or corporate line.
  • IISER has a completely different approach. It focuses on scientific research and you will most probably end up in academia or research-oriented jobs.
  • IIEST is a very old and reputed institute in the country and definitely, its placements will be better compared to IISER Bhopal.

This decision entirely depends on you. Choose which career path you want to avail yourself and work toward establishing it.
