One of my friends had an option between Mechanical at IIT Indore and CS at a new IIT. He chose Mechanical at IIT Indore. Judging by his experience it is safe to say that he made the right decision at least for 2-3 more years.
The choice is up to you if you would rather trade off on the branch or on the institution. If you are confident you can secure a good future from the limited opportunities a new IIT can offer, you should go for it.
For Mechanical Engineering, these five IITs should be ranked in the order given below.
IIT Bhubaneswar
IIT Indore
IIT Jodhpur
IIT Ropar
IIT Mandi
In IIT Bhubaneswar the average package for the mechanical branch offered was 8.8 lakhs p.a. last year and a total of 91% of students got placed from this branch. According to MHRD rankings, IIT-B has made the most significant improvement among all IITs by jumping to 17th rank. NALCO, TATA STEEL, VEDANTA, TECH MAHINDRA are the major recruiters at this college.
After IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT-Indore’s mechanical department is undertaking the best ongoing research. It also boasts of the most modern Central Workshop in India. HPCL, Tata Motors, L & T, ISRO, Mahindra, being some of the major recruiters in the college. In last year’s placement drive the average package offered was 8 lakhs p.a. for mechanical last year while the highest was 16 lakhs p.a.
With 64% placement last year, IIT Ropar is one of the best places for mechanical studies in India. NIRF ranks IIT-R 29nt under Top Engineering Institutes in India. Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, L&T, Amazon, Facebook, Oyo, Flipkart, Futures First, etc. are the top recruiting companies here.
IIT Jodhpur recorded 83% placement last year for mechanical students while the average package was around 8 lakhs p.a. BPCL, TCS, NBC Bearings, Tata Motors, are the companies conducting placement drives here. IIP program in IIT-J allows students to go for internships from the first year which is a plus point in comparison to other IITs.
With 61% placement for the mechanical branch in the last year, IIT-Mandi comes last among the other colleges aforementioned. The average salary package for mechanical students ranged from 6 to 7 lakhs per annum. In comparison to other institutes, IIT-Mandi falls short in figures and therefore is ranked last here.
Indian Institute of Technology's (IIT) is among the top Institutions of India. IIIT Indore and IIT Bhubaneswar are ranked 10 and 22 in the engineering category respectively by NIRF in 2020. The admissions in both the Institute is done through national level examinations.

It is difficult to say which is a better institution Because it all depends on individual choices based on the various aspects. Students can make a well-informed choice between the two IITs for the EEE program based on the important points given above.
IIT Bhubaneswar has seen a placement rate in civil engineering of 89%. TATA Steel also offers huge placement packages for the students of IIT Bhubaneswar. In 2019, IIT Bhubaneswar received the highest package of 39 LPA. After the CSE and metallurgical departments, the civil engineers received better placements. Almost 90% of civil engineers got placed in the core industries with an average package of 11.45 LPA. Vizag Steel Plant, Jindal Stainless Steel, DRDO, BHEL, are few companies that visited.
IIT Bhubaneswar has close tie-ups with IIT Kharagpur. Many of them are ex-professors from IIT Kharagpur, and the syllabus also follows the IIT Kharagpur curriculum. The School of Infrastructure at IIT Bhubaneswar is actively involved in various academic/sponsored research projects and consultancy work.
At IIT Indore, more than 50 companies in the placement drive offered 101 offers to 89 students. The recruiters visited the campus were Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Goldman Sachs. Around 99% of the students received offers from reputed companies in 2018. According to the NIRF 2020 ranking, between IIT Indore(9) and IIT Bhubaneswar(22), IIT Indore is the better option because of its research and faculty section. IIT Indore is often compared with older IITs in these strata of research.
Both these institutes offer decent Civil Engineering in terms of academics and placement, so, choosing between these two IITs for civil engineering is difficult. So, choose according to your convenience.
IIT Indore is among the highly sought after technical institutes.
Metallurgy is a sub branch of Mechanical Engineering. The College IIT Indore is great according to the placement statistics. IIT Indore had 90% placement in 2018-2019 with an average annual salary package of 18 lakhs per annum and the highest being 43 lakhs per annum. Recruiters at IIT Indore include companies like Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), VISA Steel, Tata Iron and Steel Company Limited (TISCO), etc.
IIT Bhubaneswar is just behind IIT Indore. It has seen 85% placements in 2019 with an average annual salary package of 15 lakhs per annum for undergraduates, marking an increase of 25% over the last year. The highest domestic package offered was worth 43 lakhs per annum.
IIT Bhubaneswar also has collaborations with many foreign universities like University of Warwick, University of Southampton, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Western Ontario, University of New York, University of North Dakota USA, and McGill University.
To conclude, both institutes are equally good due to their placement percentage being somewhat similar. Both colleges have the same major recruiters such as COAL India, TATA Advanced Systems, TATA Steel Group, DRDO, Usha Martin, JCAP, etc.
Both the branches are totally different from each other so first decide what you want to study for the next 4 years. Both the IITs are new and there is not much difference in them. Metallurgy is a sub-branch of mechanical and civil is a core branch. Civil engineering has better job opportunities if you compare it to metallurgy engineering.
The average package at IIT Indore for the year 2019 was 16.05 LPA and at IIT Bhubaneswar it was 11.44 LPA. If you want to get a job in the core-sector then it would be a bit difficult because both the branches have very low placements in the core sector. Students usually go for higher studies and others for non core placements. Civil engineering will give you a better opportunity if you want to go for higher studies.
The suggestion will be that you should focus on what branch you are more passionate about and choose that. Don’t go compare colleges, both are IITs therefore are equally good and offer similar facilities.
